![]() Lucy Anne Hurston is the niece of famed writer, folklorist, and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston. Zora is one of the most celebrated authors today. Lucy continues to promote and educate others on her aunt's contributions.
![]() Lucy produced and hosted two documentaries with Dr. James Miller, Professor of Afro-American Studies at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. Additionally, Lucy directed the first high school presentation of "Mule Bone" in 1992. She has participated in numerous speaking engagements, panels, and presentations where she has rare family insight into unexplored areas of Zora's legend.
Lucy's admiration and respect for her aunt inspired her to return to college where she has become a member of Phi Theta Kappa (National Honor Society), Alpha Mu Gamma (Foreign Language National Honor Society), Alpha Kappa Delta (Sociology National Honor Society), and Zeta Phi Beta, the sorority to which her aunt belonged. In 1993 Lucy received her A.S. in General Studies from Manchester Community College. In 1995 Lucy received her BA from Central Connecticut State University. She majored in Sociology and carried a triple minor in Women's Studies, Anthropology, and African-American Studies earning the honor of Outstanding Graduating Senior in Sociology. Lucy completed her Master's Degree in Sociology on a Special Dean's Fellowship at Ohio State University in 1997. Lucy was the recipient of the 1998 Manchester Community College Distinguished Alumni Award and the 2000 Faculty Merit Award from Naugatuck Valley Community College.
Following in her aunt's footsteps, Lucy, too, is a writer and her first publication, Dad and Luch, appeared in the 1998 anthology Jump Up and Say! edited by Linda Goss. Her first book, a Doubleday Publication, is entitled You Don't Live But Once. She is also working on a novel, Pressed Within the Folds.
